The Indian government has notified the formation of the National Turmeric Board. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry of the Indian government has stated that the National Turmeric Board will focus on the development of turmeric and turmeric products in the country. The National Turmeric Board will provide leadership on matters related to turmeric, enhance efforts, and facilitate greater coordination with the Spice Board and other government agencies in the development and growth of the turmeric sector.
The ministry stated that 'due to the health benefits and worldwide interest in turmeric, the board will contribute to creating new markets at the international level, increasing awareness, and boosting consumption, research, and development in new products, and fostering the development of our traditional knowledge. It will particularly focus on building the capacity and skill development of turmeric producers to obtain higher profits through value addition.' The board will also promote quality and adhere to food safety standards and such norms. The activities of the board will be centered on and dedicated to the better welfare and prosperity of turmeric producers through a significant price increase near the fields, ensuring better prices for their produce.
The ministry explained that the board's activities in research, market development, increased consumption, and price stabilization will also ensure that producers and processors maintain their prominent position as global exporters of high-quality turmeric and turmeric products. The board will have a chairman appointed by the central government, a member of the Ministry of Ayush, and representatives from the Central Government's Pharmaceuticals, Agriculture, and Farmer Welfare, Commerce and Industry departments, as well as senior representatives from three state governments (on a rotational basis).
