Government new initiative to promote regenerative farming in India
Regenerative farming is transforming agriculture

With the rising population and increasing nutritional demands, the pressure on food systems is mounting. Climate change and challenges in food production are severely impacting the income and livelihood of farmers. The pressing question remains: how will this nation of over 150 million small-scale farmers tackle these challenges? The answer lies in *Regenerative Farming.

India First Forward Farm Launched: Empowering Farmers for Self-Sufficiency:

On September 10, 2024, an international organization, Bayer, in collaboration with a leading private agricultural institution, launched Forward Farming. This initiative marks the establishment of India’s first, and the world’s 29th, Forward Farm. This technology promotes partnerships with self-sufficient farmers globally, while fostering active management and equipping farmers to run successful businesses. Forward Farms lead in the cultivation of crops, arable land management, and the adoption of advanced technologies. Spanning 18 hectares, the Panipat Center in Haryana is home to the first Forward Farm in India, where fruits, vegetables, wheat, and sweet corn are grown. It features a polyhouse nursery, solar panels, drip irrigation, vermicomposting, IoT-based weather stations, and several other facilities aiding regenerative agriculture.

Regenerative Forward Farming to Provide Modern Solutions for Farmers:

The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) congratulated the establishment of regenerative Forward Farming. Dr. Barman, Additional Director General of ICAR, stated that ICAR has already signed agreements with organizations to develop climate-resilient technologies. Through Forward Farming, India will offer farmers sustainable agricultural solutions, modern tools, and management practices. Regenerative Forward Farming focuses on increasing productivity, enhancing quality and yield, and achieving these goals without harming the environment. In India, this technology is continuously being developed to promote and enhance the agricultural sector. Regenerative Forward Farming simplifies farmers' access to digital tools while also promoting water conservation and soil management.

Forward Farming to Enhance Farmers' Technological Capacity:

Dr. Padaria from ICAR echoed these sentiments, with Natasha Saitas, Head of Sustainability and Strategic Initiatives in the Crop Science Division, further emphasizing that improving farmers' conditions will help enhance crop systems. This will not only come from the development of digital tools but also by increasing farmers' technical knowledge. Forward Farms bridge the gap between traditional methods and modern solutions, ensuring a balance between agricultural practices and environmental sustainability. Additionally, through the development of various vegetables, fruits, and grains, Forward Farming will gradually showcase its impact on farmers' livelihoods while promoting soil health. The farm’s goal is to provide small-scale farmers across the country with the right knowledge and tools for increased production, all while maintaining environmental care.
