Severe Heatwave Sweeps Across India, Rain Expected in Southern States: IMD Report

India is currently grappling with severe heatwaves across most states, with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing heatwave warnings for several regions. On May 19, the IMD has alerted residents of Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh about the severe heat conditions. Meanwhile, southern states like Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Odisha can expect rain and thunderstorms.

Ongoing Extreme Heat in Northern States

The IMD reports that on May 19, temperatures are expected to rise further in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh. Heatwave conditions are likely to prevail in parts of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana. The weather in Konkan, Goa, and sub-Himalayan West Bengal is predicted to be hot and humid. Nighttime temperatures in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan are also expected to remain high.

Rain and Thunderstorm Alert for the Next 24 Hours

According to the weather forecast, the next 24 hours will bring thunderstorms and heavy rain to parts of Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Lakshadweep, and Odisha, as well as the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Light to moderate rain is also expected in southern Chhattisgarh, northeastern India, central Maharashtra, southern Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat.

Additionally, the southwest monsoon is projected to advance over the south Andaman Sea, southeastern Bay of Bengal, and parts of the Nicobar Islands around May 19. 

Residents in affected areas are advised to take necessary precautions to cope with the extreme heat and stay updated on weather alerts.
