Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced on Friday an increase of 11 rupees per quintal in the price of sugarcane. After the Chief Minister's announcement, Manjit Singh Rai, the president of the farmers' organization Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU-Douaba), stated that the increase is too low. Rai said, "The price increase is too low. We are not happy with the price hike. The prices should be increased as much as promised to us.
Rai mentioned that during a meeting with the Chief Minister in Chandigarh last week, it was stated that Haryana recently increased sugarcane prices by 14 rupees per quintal, and there was assurance that the increase in Punjab's prices would be more than 14 rupees per quintal. Therefore, they were expecting the new rate to be at least 400 rupees per quintal.
He emphasized that if the government does not increase sugarcane prices as promised, farmers will be compelled to protest again. Rai also demanded the immediate start of sugar mills in the state.
