Monsoon Update 2024: Heavy Rainfall Warning Issued for These States, IMD Forecast

As the heatwave continues to scorch the northern states of India, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall warning for today, May 26, in several regions including West Bengal, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Kerala, and Mahe.

Heavy Rainfall Alert for West Bengal,Odisha and Northeastern States:

West Bengal: 

On May 26 and 27, coastal districts of West Bengal and the eastern districts adjoining Bangladesh are likely to experience light to moderate rainfall at most places, with some areas expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall. There is a forecast of extremely heavy rainfall (≥ 20 cm) in some districts on May 26. The peak rainfall activity is anticipated from the afternoon of May 26 to the afternoon of May 27. Additionally, on May 27 and 28, eastern districts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal may see heavy to very heavy rainfall at many places.

Odisha:

Northern coastal Odisha is expected to witness light to moderate rainfall at most locations on May 26, with some areas likely to experience heavy rainfall.

Northeastern States:

On May 26, most places in Mizoram, Tripura, and southern Manipur are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall, with heavy to very heavy rainfall in some areas. On May 27 and 28, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in parts of Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur, and Tripura. Extremely heavy rainfall (≥ 20 cm) is forecasted for Assam and Meghalaya on May 27 and 28, Arunachal Pradesh on May 28, and Mizoram and Tripura on May 27.

Fishermen Warning:

Fishermen are advised to avoid venturing into the south Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea until May 26, and the north Bay of Bengal until May 27. Those currently at sea are urged to return to the coast immediately.

Rainfall in the Last 24 Hours:

On May 25, several regions, including Kerala and Mahe, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Assam and Meghalaya, Jharkhand, Arunachal Pradesh, West Bengal, and Goa, received rainfall. There was heavy rainfall at isolated places over north coastal Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
