States with Highest Rainfall

As the monsoon season crosses its halfway mark, India has experienced slightly above-average rainfall so far. Typically, from June 1st to August 19th, the country receives around 603.9 mm of rainfall. However, this year, the recorded rainfall has reached 627.0 mm, which is 4% above the normal level. Until last week, this figure was hovering around 6% above normal, but the recent lull in rainfall has brought it down slightly.

States with Highest Rainfall:

Among the states, Tamil Nadu has received the highest above-average rainfall, followed by Rajasthan, Maharashtra weather, Goa, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Sikkim.

Rainfall Percentages in Key States:

  • Tamil Nadu: 84% above normal
  • Goa: 47% above normal
  • Rajasthan: 40% above normal
  • Sikkim: 32% above normal
  • Andhra Pradesh: 32% above normal
  • Karnataka: 25% above normal
  • Maharashtra: 22% above normal

Overall, the country has recorded 4% more rainfall than usual.

Rainfall Alerts in Various Regions:

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued heavy rainfall warnings for northeastern and central India. An orange alert is in place for several states, including West Bengal, Nagaland, Mizoram, and Tripura. Additionally, there are heavy to very heavy rainfall alerts for Bihar, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh, while Uttar Pradesh remains on rainfall alert.

Forecast for the Next 7 Days Across India:

  • Northwest India: Widespread light to moderate rainfall is expected between August 20th and 25th in Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and East Rajasthan, with heavy rainfall at some locations. Uttarakhand may experience very heavy rainfall on August 20th.
  • West and Central India: Regions including Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, and Gujarat are likely to see widespread light to moderate rainfall and heavy showers between August 20th and 26th.
  • East and Northeast India: Assam, Meghalaya, and other northeastern states are expected to receive widespread light to moderate rainfall from August 20th to 24th, with heavy rainfall likely in some areas. Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Assam are under a warning for very heavy rainfall.
  • South India: Kerala, Mahe, Lakshadweep, Coastal Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, and Interior Karnataka are expected to see widespread light to moderate rainfall and heavy showers from August 20th to 25th. Very heavy rainfall is anticipated in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Lakshadweep, and Kerala on August 20th.

Monsoon Trough Update: According to the IMD, the monsoon trough at sea level currently passes through Sri Ganganagar, Hisar, Delhi, Bareilly, Lucknow, Varanasi, Daltonganj, Ranchi, Bankura, and the center of a low-pressure area over central Bangladesh, extending to the northeastern Bay of Bengal. Residents in affected areas are advised to stay updated with local weather forecasts and take necessary precautions due to the intensification of monsoon activities.
