New Delhi, June 18 – North India is currently in the grip of an intense heatwave, impacting both plains and hilly regions. From Ladakh in the north to Jharkhand in the central-eastern part of the country, large areas are suffering under extreme heat conditions. On June 17, Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh recorded a scorching maximum temperature of 47.6°C, the highest in the region. Today, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heatwave alert for Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh, northern Madhya Pradesh, and northern Rajasthan weather.
The IMD forecasts that there will be no significant change in maximum temperatures over northwestern India for the next 24 hours. However, a slight relief is expected with a drop of 2 to 3 degrees Celsius thereafter. Central and eastern India will continue to endure high temperatures for the next three days, with some respite likely afterward.
Delhi is experiencing one of its hottest spells this summer. The IMD has issued a heatwave alert for the national capital today, June 18. The maximum temperature is expected to soar to 45°C, while the minimum temperature might hover around 34°C. The relentless heat is making daily life difficult for the residents, with many opting to stay indoors and keep hydrated.
However, there is some hope on the horizon. According to the IMD, the weather is expected to change starting June 19. Light rain and thunderstorms are likely on June 19 and 20, which could bring much-needed relief to the capital. Strong winds accompanying these weather conditions are expected to result in a slight drop in temperatures, offering a temporary respite from the severe heat.
