Fish Farming use these tips in Summer Season to Save Fish in Pond

During the scorching summer months, the temperature of water rises considerably due to the intense sunlight, leading to a reduction in oxygen levels crucial for the fish. Consequently, not only shrimp but also other fish perish in the ponds due to the extreme heat. Uttar Pradesh has already experienced the onset of blistering heat, with temperatures escalating daily. This has heightened concerns among farmers involved in fish farming during the summer season, as the water in the ponds evaporates rapidly. In such circumstances, farmers must give special attention to their ponds.

Cash Ahmad, the District Fisheries Officer of Mau, Uttar Pradesh, explained that when the temperature surpasses 40 degrees Celsius, the water in the fish ponds begins to boil. Due to the rapid heating, oxygen levels in the water decrease significantly. Consequently, not only shrimp but other fish species also start suffocating in the ponds due to the intense heat.

Preserving Fish from Excessive Summer Sunlight:

Fishery authorities recommend that to counteract the impact of high temperatures on fish, water should be replaced daily in the ponds during the summer months. The water level in the pond should be maintained at a maximum of 5 feet. Moreover, if the water in the pond turns green, reduce the amount of feed given to the fish. Cash Ahmad further advised adding lime to the pond water. Lime should be soaked for 24 hours prior to spreading it across the entire pond. This ensures a steady oxygen level in the pond, safeguarding the fish from harm.

District fisheries officers suggest that if fish become ill due to the rising temperatures, potassium permanganate or red medication should be applied to the pond. This aids in preserving the oxygen levels in the pond, thus preventing fish mortality. It is advisable not to overcrowd the fish during the summer season. If there is an excess of fish in the pond, some should be transferred to another pond. Dissolve two to three grams of vitamin C in a liter of clean water along with 100 grams of jaggery and administer it to the fish.
