Effective Prevention Methods for Protecting Chickens from Intense Heat and Heatstroke

Chicken farming stands as a profitable and significant enterprise supporting countless farmers and their families for sustenance. With the arrival of scorching temperatures starting from April, not only humans but also livestock encounter adversities. Farmers involved in chicken farming bear considerable losses due to the frequent deaths of chickens amidst these intense heatwaves, sparking concerns among stakeholders in the poultry industry.

Impact of Heat on Chicken Mortality:

Chickens are highly vulnerable to heat stress, often leading to fatalities. It has been observed that out of every 100 chickens, approximately 4-5 succumb to extreme heat. However, in recent times, the mortality rate has soared to nearly 8-10 chickens per 100 due to escalating temperatures. Delicate chicken breeds struggle to endure the heat, amplifying worries for poultry farmers as their livelihood hinges on these birds.

Managing Chicken Feeding During Summers:

To ensure the welfare of chickens during the scorching summer season, it is imperative to provide them with nutritious and moist food. Chickens can easily tolerate temperatures of up to 42 degrees Celsius. Hence, it is crucial to maintain a constant supply of clean and cool water in earthen pots within poultry or chicken houses at all times.

How to Safeguard Chickens from Summer Heat: To alleviate the heat stress on chickens during the summer, utilize small fans, exhaust fans, or set up shade nets and curtains above them. Sprinkle water on the chickens with sprinklers 4-5 times a day. This practice helps prevent chicken fatalities. Ensuring adequate ventilation in the poultry farm is essential to avoid overcrowding of birds. Installing shade nets on all sides and covering them with grass provides protection against direct sunlight while facilitating air circulation. Furthermore, orienting the poultry farm in the east-west direction is advisable.
