New Delhi: The Indian government will continue to provide possible assistance to coconut farmers associated with the coconut community to promote coconut farming. With the increasing number of coconut-based businesses in the country, the government is paying more attention to this sector as it is witnessing growth and creating several opportunities for new products and employment in the market. This was stated by Union Agriculture and Farmer Welfare Minister Narendra Singh Tomar.

In fact, Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Tomar, while addressing a conference of coconut farmers in Coimbatore, said that agriculture is the backbone of the country's economy, and it is the responsibility of the central and state governments to strengthen it, promote progress, and ensure profitable farming for farmers. He said that coconut farming contributes significantly to the agricultural economy. India is one of the world's third-largest coconut producers. A major portion of it is under Tamil Nadu, where 21% of the coconut cultivation area and 26% of the production are concentrated. Coimbatore is at the forefront of coconut farming in Tamil Nadu, with coconut cultivation taking place in 88,467 hectares.

Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Tomar further stated that the people here are making an important contribution to the development of the coconut sector and the enhancement of the agricultural economy. The Coconut Development Board is working towards the integration of small-scale farmers into a three-tier farmer group. Currently, there are 697 coconut producer societies, 73 coconut producer federations, and 19 coconut producer companies in the state. Support has been provided to establish 537 new processing units with a processing capacity of 3,638 million coconuts per year in India. This success has been achieved through the implementation of the mission program by the board in the country. Among these units, 136 are in Tamil Nadu, which is creating employment opportunities and helping improve the economic condition of the farmers.
