Monsoon 2024 Shifting Weather in West Bengal and Odisha
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), there are ongoing weather changes in the Bay of Bengal region, accompanied by rising sea surface temperatures. These conditions make it difficult to predict the exact arrival of the monsoon in these areas. Currently, parts of eastern India, including West Bengal and Odisha, are experiencing severe heat and heatwave conditions, expected to persist until May 18-19.
While many states across India are dealing with intense heat, the sea surface temperature in the Bay of Bengal continues to rise. This increase is causing conditions similar to those in the Andaman Sea in the southwestern and southeastern parts of the Bay of Bengal. By May 20, 2024, this could lead to rainy weather in the Bay, with surrounding areas likely experiencing precipitation. The IMD forecasts that the monsoon may reach the Andaman and Nicobar Islands by May 19.
The rising sea surface temperatures and unfavourable atmospheric conditions over the Bay of Bengal are causing rapid weather changes. This will likely lead to localized rainfall in the surrounding areas. While many parts of the country are already experiencing altered weather patterns, the most significant change this year is the anticipated early entry of the monsoon through the eastern states via the Bay of Bengal, rather than through the southern regions.
Residents in West Bengal, Odisha, and neighbouring areas should prepare for these weather changes, as the approaching monsoon is expected to bring much, needed relief from the ongoing heat.
